Riz Boardshorts

Riz Boardshorts - a case study from Advance London

Riz Boardshorts Ltd (“RIZ”) was founded by Riz Smith and Ali Murrell in 2009.

Based in London, they launched the brand as a more soulful and sartorial (not to mention sustainable) approach to mens’ swimwear. Elegantly tailored, ethically sourced; shorts perfect in or out of the sea.

Central to this vision are three core elements: Sustainability, Substance and Style. This triad of principles underpins the philosophy of all Riz shorts and is symbolized by the iconic inverted pyramid cut into the back waistband.

To define what sustainability means to them, they wanted to focus the entire product life in to a 360-degree process:

Knowing that the oceans are littered with plastics and to do their part, every pair of RIZ shorts are crafted from 100% recycled and recyclable fabric (polyester) as well as being digitally printed in the UK using earth friendly inks. Ultimately their #bottlestoboardshorts project is working towards developing their own fabric from locally collected plastics destined for landfill or the oceans and beaches here in the UK, thus creating a more circular and transparent approach.

What’s more, the pioneering Rizcycle scheme allows consumers to return their old shorts for re-use, re-purpose or recycling in return for a discount off their next pair; focusing the entire product life into a perpetual 360 degree process.
